Nice to know someone else uses ISW! I too rely on it as my primary software, have used it almost daily since 1994. Powerful, nearly perfect. Wish pieces of it were available in the cloud and/or on iphone.

Have you checked out the heavily revised version 3.5?

I have and I'm heavily unimpressed. The titles of items that come up when you do a search have been replaced by a series of graphic representations of the notes, in little boxes. That is actually useful if the notes are pictures, but for notes are in text form, it's hopeless - the little boxes are too small for the text to be readable.

As well as that, the performance is much slower than in version 3.1. In fact on the computer I've trialled version 3.5 on, a P4-2800, performance was so bad that Evernote was unuseable.

Fortunately version 3.5 gets installed separately and you don't lose version 3.1. Both work with the same database. But what guarantees are there that some time in the future the Evernote database will only work with versions 3.5 or later? That would be disastrous from my point of view, because text notes are likely to always be the main thing I want to store - and easily access - on Evernote.

Accessing text is the real advantage of Evernote as far as I’m concerned. For graphics there are other services like Flickr and Picasa that let you combine offline and online storage.

Thought the comments on the GDP (which I read to Kat - who decided she was in your corner adding that they used to laugh about being able to carpet Lichtenstein for US$27.00) were great!!

I finally found this article again and thought you might find this report on theonomy interesting :)

Some of the people complaining about lack of delta synching in Syncplicity have wanted to use the service with their Outlook .pst files. How practical that would be with Dropbox, I don't know, but you're not the only one thinking about it.

I wonder from time to time whether I should move lock stock and barrel to Gmail. I use Gmail a lot anyway. It's useful because it's available everywhere, but its interface infuriates me.

It's a moveable feast John.

With Ubuntu 9.04 my networking problems went away :)

Apple infuriated me with their hardware pricing,

Microsoft have redeemed themselves with Windows 7,

DropBox and Evernote have eliminated my difficulty with Linux data file synching between machines.

At present I'm using Windows 7 on my desk machine and I've also installed it on my 13" MacBook for use as a netbook.
I won't be going back to the Mac OS unless they get real about their hardware.
Long term I'd like to switch to Linux but I'll probably stick with Windows until my current versions of Photoshop and Dreamweaver pass their use-by date.
I may modify that plan if Evernote produce a Linux local client.

Interesting point John. Does that mean that one could use Dropbox for outlook.pst files? I've traded Outlook for Gmail in part because the huge PST file needs to be synched after even minuscule changes. If delta synching worked for Outlook or Thunderbird I may be tempted to look again at a local email client

Alan - I thought you'd ditched Linux entirely, mainly due to networking problems. And that you'd moved lock stock and barrel to Macs? Now I see you're still running Windows.

I'm still using Ubuntu (9.03) on my Eee netbook via Eeebuntu. When it's going great, it's great, but it sure has problems, partly due to the Eee kludge not always keeping up with Ubuntu updates. That's not going to improve either, because the Eeebuntu people intend to move away from Ubuntu. I don't want to move with them, but fear my machine will eventually be killed by an Ubuntu upgrade. But as it is, I've done at least four complete OS reinstalls on that netbook in 18 months - once from the horrible Xandros it was shipped with, and then three reinstalls of Eeebuntu. That's over 18 months. I'd feel pretty hard done by if I'd had to reinstall Windows on my other machines as often.

In fact I haven't needed to do any Windows reinstalls at all. However Windows 7 is going to replace XP on my big laptop this holiday season.

I set up Ubuntu 9.10 as a dual boot with Windows 7 on my office machine, but only out of curiousity. It's not practical in my real world because it doesn't run the programs I use professionally. Aside from that, Ubuntu 9.10 does look good - though not as good as Windows 7, IMHO.
