Jonathan Schell is an insightful writer and scholar. He has encapsulated the twentieth century's legacy to our children's children in this statement:

“Taken in its entirety, the increase in mankind’s strength has brought about a decisive, many-sided shift in the balance of strength between man and the earth."

"Nature, once a harsh and feared master, now lies in subjection and needs protection against man’s powers.”

“Yet because man, no matter what intellectual and technical heights he may scale, remains embedded in nature, the balance has shifted against him too, and the threat that he poses to the Earth is a threat to him as well.”

Jonathan Schell

We already have serious problems caused by our exploding population, our profligate ways, and finite resources. There seems little likelihood that sufficient action is going to be taken by governments around the world in the short term to prevent those problems developing into disasters within decades.

If, in the next few years, we don't take drastic steps to change our ways those problems will become catastrophic.

Our future, and the future of most life on the planet, is at risk.

The naked ape is a casualty of its own success. Just how much of a casualty depends upon how long it takes us to change our ways.

Those who deny that climate change is happening are – thankfully – losing the credibility battle. Those who say that it's happening, but that it isn't our fault, have fading support.

This is a bigger challenge for mankind than anything in our history. It behoves all of us to do what we can to win that challenge. On an individual basis, adopting low energy lamps and reacquainting ourselves with bikes and Shank's Pony aren't going to make a detectable difference in the long run. Persuading people in positions of authority that the time for procrastination is over is what's needed.

Are you unsure or sceptical about climate change?

Rather than reinvent the wheel, I recommend this page on grist.com:

How to Talk to a Climate Skeptic: Responses to the most common skeptical arguments on global warming.

Nothing is more important

I'll be building a resource of current information on our climate, our environment, our alternatives and what you and I can do to secure a future for our children and for their children.

Starting with a look at electric vehicles right here.

And some answers for the sceptics from Mark Lynas right here.

What You Won't Get

Should you give me your email address or any other details, I won't give them to anyone else, not ever, end of story.  I won't try to sell you anything, I won't put any cookies on your PC and I won't plague you with pop-ups or spyware.

Exception: My blog, @ my wits' end, will put a benign cookie on your computer so that the site knows who you are when you post a comment. Just like every other blog on the planet.
